Mrs Fritz and a student studying a map

Students in a social studies class at La Grande Middle School have recently been studying ancient Greek history, including gods, titans, heroes and more. During their class in February, their teacher, Anne Marie Fritz, began the class period by passing out some maps and asking questions like:

Where is the island of Crete?

Who was Hercules?

Can you find Athens on the map?

Fritz indicated how students should color in important places on the map. She also talked about Mount Olympus, the famed home of the Greek Gods and explained that the Greek God Hercules was a real person to the Grecians. “When you are a big, strong guy like Hercules, you have a responsibility to take care of the people,” she said.

Here’s what a few seventh graders said about the Greek unit they are starting and their social studies class in general:

Daxon said he thinks the most exciting thing about the Greek unit will be learning about the eruptions of the volcanoes and earthquakes going on.

Logan said he is excited about the Greek Day where students choose a specific god and write about it.

Temperance is excited to learn more about the Greek gods and what people believed about them. She also loves learning about the different foods in cultures and what the people eat.

Xyla said Ms. Fritz does a good job of introducing a new unit in a slideshow and students can take notes so when the map comes out you already know where everything is and tie it all together. She said during the Egyptian unit they got to build models of King Tut’s tomb, which was really fun because it was hands-on.

Keep up the great learning, Wildcats!
