La Grande School District is reviewing how students store and use cell phones and backpacks during the day. Currently, students keep their cell phones in their backpacks because they use backpacks to carry Chromebooks, textbooks, notebooks and other materials. This helps reduce time spent going back and forth to lockers. However, there are concerns that backpacks may be used to conceal items that could affect student safety, such as vapes, drugs or weapons.
The district is also reviewing a new state requirement to eliminate cell phone use during the instructional day, including lunch and passing periods.
Your feedback will help the district make an informed, balanced decision that supports learning, safety and communication.
